With a thousand points, you barely notice the delay. With a million, you're doing a million distance calculations for every single query. On a phone updating the map as the user scrolls, that's untenable.
Greek omicron (ο, U+03BF) is as dangerous as Cyrillic o: pixel-identical in 40+ fonts. But Greek rho (ρ, U+03C1, which maps to p) is pixel-identical only in Phosphate and Copperplate, two geometric/all-caps fonts where the structural distinction between rho and Latin p collapses. This is font-specific risk, not script-wide risk.

As part of their research, they have put together a set of proposed improvements for Node.js' Web streams implementation that will eliminate promises in certain code paths which can yield a significant performance boost up to 10x faster, which only goes to prove the point: promises, while useful, add significant overhead. As one of the core maintainers of Node.js, I am looking forward to helping Malte and the folks at Vercel get their proposed improvements landed!
